چکیده

Abstract. We report on results of an intercomparison 10 global sea-ice concentration (SIC) data products at 12.5 to 50.0 km grid resolution from satellite passive microwave (PMW) observations. For this we use SIC estimated >350 images acquired in the visible–near-infrared frequency range by joint National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) United States Geological Survey (USGS) Landsat sensor during years 2003–2011 2013–2015. Conditions covered are late winter/early spring Northern Hemisphere winter through fall freeze-up Southern Hemisphere. Among investigated four European Organisation for Exploitation Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Ocean Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) algorithms SICCI-2 OSI-450. stress importance consider across entire instead focusing overall mean differences take into account known biases PMW products, e.g., thin ice. find superior linear agreement between 25 50 both hemispheres. discuss quantitatively various uncertainty sources evaluation carried out. Enhanced Sea Ice Concentrations from Passive Microwave Data

1. Introduction Sea ice concentration is usually defined as the fraction of ice covered area within an observational field, which in our case is the footprint of the satellite sensor. This assumes that the ocean surface is binary, i.e., either ice covered or ice free. With the binary characterization of the ice covered surface in mind, ice concentration can be quantified from satellite instrume...

Data fusion for use of passive microwave data in operational sea-ice monitoring

A new SSM/I algorithm is described that is based on near real-time data fusion with portions of operational ice charts derived from RADARSAT, OLS or AVHRR data. The aim of this is to enable parts of the ice chart where there is no cloud-free imagery or SAR data to be completed using an SSM/I algorithm that is tuned to the region and time associated with the ice chart. The algorithm is a linear ...

Sea ice extent from satellite microwave sensors

provide a convenient way to monitor the vast expanses of sea ice in the Polar Regions and this is done primarily using microwave techniques, which contrary to optical instruments, can operate at night and in all-weather conditions. The determination of sea ice extents from satellite platforms can be exploited as a marker for climate change, a navigation tool and a reference for coupled ocean-ic...
